How to choose a spice grinder
“Spice grinder” is a loose label, so this guide defines it by what a listing states. Here a spice grinder is a countertop electric blade grinder, or a grinder sold for spices and nuts, whose own Amazon listing text says it grinds spices. A coffee grinder counts only when its own listing names spices. Salt-and-pepper mills do not count, because their listings cover salt and peppercorns only, and neither do grain mills or herb grinders sold with a pollen catcher. We report what each listing says and attribute it to the listing.
- Blade or burr. Serious Eats says almost every spice grinder is a blade grinder, a double-armed blade that cuts and knocks whole spices apart, and that these are mostly sold as coffee grinders with spices as an aside in the manual. It does not recommend blade grinders for coffee itself. Four of our five listings are written around coffee, and only the Cuisinart Spice and Nut Grinder is written for spices.
- Keep spices apart from coffee. Serious Eats says separate grinders prevent flavor crossover, so no cumin in your coffee and no coffee in your curry. If you will use one grinder for both, wipe it out between uses.
- How the blade sits. Serious Eats measured blades and found the ones 8.5 to 10 millimeters up from the bottom of the bowl ground most evenly. None of our five listings gives a blade height.
- Removable bowl or fixed bowl. Serious Eats found removable cups were not always easier to clean, because spice dust gathers in crevices, and generally less efficient than fixed cups. A removable cup does let you put the bowl in the dishwasher, which the Cuisinart Spice and Nut Grinder and the Hamilton Beach Fresh Grind listings state. The other three listings do not say whether the bowl comes out.
- A lid you can see through. Clear lids let you watch the grind, as the Amazon Basics Fast Electric and Wancle listings say, but Serious Eats found they soon cake with spice dust, and that potent oils in cinnamon and cloves cloud clear plastic.
- Size and nuts. Epicurious says the Cuisinart Spice and Nut Grinder had the largest capacity of the grinders it tried and could handle up to half a cup of nuts. Food & Wine adds that a grinder is also handy for crushing peanuts as a garnish or breaking down dried herbs.
- Dry only. Serious Eats says most electric spice grinders suit dry ingredients, so check the manual before adding nuts, fresh herbs or anything that gives off moisture.
What we left out, and why
We read 116 search cards, 103 different products, and the pages of 10 contenders. We kept 5.
- KRUPS Precision Electric Coffee Grinder. It sits in a variant menu of 12 KRUPS listings that mixes several models, and its review total is about nine times the KRUPS Silent Vortex’s, so the rows cannot show whose reviews they are.
- KRUPS Silent Vortex. It shares that same menu. Serious Eats also found it left uneven cinnamon and let dust into the base.
- Secura Electric Coffee and Spice Grinder. Its review total and its score are identical to a Secura kitchen timer in our kitchen timers guide, so the pool is shared across two different products. Its own listing also warns against grinding cinnamon, cloves or coconut.
- Latent Epicure Electric Salt and Pepper Grinder Set. Food & Wine likes it, but its listing covers sea salt, Himalayan salt and peppercorns only, which this guide’s definition leaves out.
- COOL KNIGHT Herb Grinder. It is sold as an herb grinder with a pollen catcher, and its brand text names herb enthusiasts and medication users, so it is not a kitchen spice grinder by this guide’s test.
About 25 electric salt-and-pepper sets, grain mills and unbranded mini grinders in the search were outside the definition, and we did not read their pages. Wirecutter has no page in Google’s top 10 for this keyword, so there is no Wirecutter pick in the comparison table.
How we researched
On October 5, 2026 we read the Amazon search results for "electric spice grinder" in Chrome: 116 cards across two pages, 103 different products, 95 of them organic. AI compared them, set aside sponsored cards, salt-and-pepper mills, grain mills, burr coffee grinders and herb grinders, read the product details of 10 contenders through a data provider on the same day and chose 5 grinders whose own listing text names spices. AI wrote this guide from that research.
Listings change: we read them on October 5, 2026, and a size, color, seller or stock may differ today. Product details came through a data provider, which keeps each listing's text but not its star breakdown, its customer summary or its review text, so every feature below is the listing's own statement. The provider keeps only the opening of each bullet, so a feature may exist that the text we read does not name. The search was for electric grinders, so manual grinders, mortars and pod-style grinders are not covered. Wirecutter has no page in the top 10 for this keyword.
Prices, ratings and review counts come from Amazon and were read on October 5, 2026.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best spice grinder?
For most cooks, the Cuisinart Spice and Nut Grinder: it is the only one of our five whose listing is written for spices and nuts, and Serious Eats, Epicurious and Food & Wine all name it. To use one grinder for coffee and spices, the Hamilton Beach Fresh Grind names peppercorns and fennel.
Can a coffee grinder grind spices?
Yes, if the grinder’s own listing says it grinds spices; four of our five do. Serious Eats says to keep a separate grinder for each if you can, because spice flavors carry over into the next batch of coffee. Buying whole beans to grind? See our coffee beans guide.
What is the difference between a spice grinder and a pepper mill?
A pepper mill is a hand-turned or battery-powered mill for peppercorns and salt, and it sits on the table. A spice grinder is a blade grinder that turns whole seeds, bark and pods into powder in seconds. Food & Wine and Serious Eats review pepper mills separately, and this guide leaves them out of its five.
How do you clean a spice grinder?
Serious Eats says to keep liquid out of the motorized base, grind a few tablespoons of raw white rice to lift spice residue and odors, then dust out the powder and wipe the bowl with a damp cloth, using baking soda or a little white vinegar for stains. A removable bowl can be washed with warm water and mild soap, or in the dishwasher only if the manual says so.
How did TwelveTabs choose these spice grinders?
AI read the Amazon search for “electric spice grinder” on October 5, 2026, set aside sponsored cards, pepper mills, grain mills and herb grinders, and read each contender’s page through a data provider. It kept the grinders whose own listing text names spices and dropped pooled listings. Each pick is a grinder a shopper can buy new today.
