How to choose coffee beans
Start with how you brew and how you like your coffee to taste. Then look at these five things.
- Roast level. The National Coffee Association sorts roasts into light, medium and dark. It says lighter roasts keep more of a coffee’s own character and taste more acidic, while darker roasts taste bolder and more “roasted”. Medium roast is so common here that it is often called the American roast.
- Strength is not caffeine. The same source says a dark roast is not higher in caffeine. Light roasts actually have slightly more. If you want more caffeine, look for a coffee that says so, rather than simply a darker roast.
- “Espresso roast” is a style, not a level. The NCA explains that an espresso roast or blend is roasted however the roaster thinks suits espresso, often medium to dark. You can brew it any way you like.
- Freshness. The NCA suggests brewing about 2 to 7 days after roasting for peak flavor, and buying smaller batches, enough for one or two weeks.
- Storage. Keep beans in an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dark place, away from the oven, the dishwasher and afternoon sun, and grind them right before you brew.
What we left out, and why
Our three searches returned 174 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 30 of them, read the listing pages of 9 finalists, and named a winner and runners-up in each search. We kept four whole bean coffees and left out these:
- New England Coffee Blueberry Cobbler, the winner of our ground coffee search, and Maxwell House Original Roast, a runner-up there. Both are ground coffee, and this guide is about whole beans.
- Starbucks French Roast Ground, a runner-up in our ground coffee search. It is ground, and a second Starbucks dark roast.
- Lavazza Super Crema and Starbucks Pike Place Roast, runners-up in our medium roast search. The first is an espresso blend from the same brand as our medium roast pick, and the second is a second Starbucks.
There is no Wirecutter pick in the table this time: Wirecutter has no guide to coffee beans we could find. Its closest guide is about coffee subscriptions.
How we researched
On September 25, 2026 we ran three live TwelveTabs searches of Amazon: “best coffee beans”, “best ground coffee” and “best medium roast coffee beans”. Together they returned 174 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 10 from each search, read the listing pages of 9 finalists and named a winner and runners-up in each. We kept four whole bean coffees that each suit a different drinker, and left out ground coffee and near-duplicates. AI wrote this guide from that research.
Listings change: we read them on September 25, 2026, and a blend, bag size or seller may differ today.

Frequently asked questions
Are whole coffee beans better than ground coffee?
Whole beans stay fresh longer. The National Coffee Association says to grind them right before you brew for the freshest flavor, and notes that pre-ground coffee in particular benefits from an airtight container. Grinding whole spices as well as beans? See our spice grinders guide.
Does dark roast coffee have more caffeine?
No. The NCA says a dark roast’s strong flavor is not a sign of more caffeine, and light roasts actually have slightly more.
How long do coffee beans stay fresh?
The NCA suggests brewing them about 2 to 7 days after roasting for peak flavor, and buying enough for one or two weeks at a time. Stored well, beans are still safe to brew after that, but they slowly lose aroma and flavor.
Should you store coffee beans in the freezer?
The NCA says views differ. Coffee absorbs moisture and smells, so if you freeze it, use a truly airtight container and take out only a week’s worth at a time.
How did TwelveTabs choose these coffee beans?
