  • Check the fill power. Mattress Clarity explains that fill power is how much space one ounce of down takes up. Higher numbers mean larger clusters, and larger clusters tend to keep their loft longer. It also warns that a high fill power, around 800, does not guarantee a firm pillow.
  • Match the loft to how you sleep. Sleep Doctor says side sleepers typically need a medium to high loft of 5 inches or more, back sleepers a medium loft of 3 to 5 inches, and stomach sleepers a low loft under 3 inches.
