How to choose espresso beans
The National Coffee Association makes a point that surprises many people: espresso is not a type of bean or a roast. It is a way of brewing, with high pressure forcing nearly boiling water through finely ground coffee in about 20 to 30 seconds. So any bean can make espresso, but some are roasted with it in mind. Look at these five things.
- Roasted for espresso. The NCA says coffee roasted for espresso best brings out its character. It also explains that “espresso roast” is not a fixed roast level: each roaster roasts it however they think suits espresso, often medium to dark.
- Dark or medium. Darker roasts taste bolder and more roasted. The NCA notes that lighter roasts keep more of a coffee’s own character, and that a dark roast is not higher in caffeine.
- Straight shots or milk drinks. The crema is the golden-brown layer on top of a shot. Blends known for rich crema, like Lavazza Super Crema, are a common choice under milk.
- Organic or decaf. Both are labelled on the bag. Our last two picks cover each.
- Bag size and freshness. The NCA suggests buying enough for one or two weeks and keeping beans in an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dark place. A big bag only makes sense if you finish it while it is fresh. Grind right before you brew, ideally with a burr grinder.
What we left out, and why
Our five searches returned 298 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 50 of them, read the listing pages of 17 finalists, and named a winner and runners-up in each search. We kept four and left out these:
- Lavazza Espresso, 100% Arabica and Lavazza Espresso Barista Gran Crema, runners-up in three searches each. They are more Lavazza espresso blends and overlapped with the Super Crema.
- Lavazza Super Crema in a 22 oz bag, a runner-up in our organic search. It is the same blend as our pick in a smaller bag.
- Lavazza Dolcevita Classico, a runner-up in our lattes search. It is made for drip coffee makers, not espresso.
- Lavazza DEK, a runner-up in our decaf search. Our search could not confirm from its listing that it was decaf or made for espresso.
There is no Wirecutter pick in the table this time: we found no Wirecutter guide to espresso beans.
How we researched
On September 25, 2026 we ran five live TwelveTabs searches of Amazon: “best espresso beans”, “best espresso beans for lattes”, “best dark roast espresso beans”, “best decaf espresso beans” and “best organic espresso beans”. Together they returned 298 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 10 from each search, read the listing pages of 17 finalists and named a winner and runners-up in each. We kept four that each suit a different drinker, and left out near-duplicates. On September 29, 2026 we re-read each pick's Amazon page for its price, rating, review count and badges, and checked the picks against a fresh Amazon search page. AI wrote this guide from that research.
Listings change: we read them on September 25, 2026, and a blend, bag size or seller may differ today.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between espresso beans and coffee beans?
There is no special espresso bean. The National Coffee Association explains that espresso is a brewing method. “Espresso” on a bag means the roaster roasted and blended it with espresso in mind, often to a medium or dark roast.
Can you use espresso beans for regular coffee?
Yes. They are ordinary coffee beans roasted for espresso, so you can brew them in a drip machine or French press.
Is espresso stronger than coffee?
In taste, yes. The NCA says espresso is denser and more concentrated. In caffeine, it depends how much you drink: it cites USDA data of about 63 mg in a 1-ounce shot and 12 to 16 mg per ounce of brewed coffee, so an 8-ounce cup of drip coffee often has more caffeine than one shot.
How should you store espresso beans?
The NCA suggests an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dark place, away from the oven and the dishwasher, and buying enough for one or two weeks at a time. Grind them right before you pull the shot.
