How to choose a K-Cup coffee maker

Serious Eats and CNET compared Keurig and other pod brewers. These are their findings, not ours.

  • The coffee itself. Serious Eats found that a cup brewed from the same pod tasted identical from the small K-Mini and from the K-Café SMART. So choose on the machine’s features and size, not on taste.
  • Strength and iced coffee. Serious Eats says a Strong mode lengthens the extraction for a more robust cup, and that the Over Ice setting depends on it. The K-Mini and the K-Classic had neither.
  • Cup sizes. Serious Eats says most of the Keurigs it compared brewed 6 to 12 oz, while the K-Classic stopped at 10 oz.
  • The water tank. A one-cup reservoir is filled before every brew, and Serious Eats notes the K-Mini’s cannot be removed for cleaning. A larger removable tank brews several cups between refills. Serious Eats says to descale with Keurig’s solution every three to six months.
  • Counter space. Serious Eats says the K-Mini takes about half the counter space of other models.
