How to choose an olive oil
Olive oil labels are confusing, and a grocery shelf can hold dozens of bottles that look the same. Wirecutter, which ran blind tastings of supermarket oils, suggests checking these four things.
- Extra virgin, or not. Extra virgin is the top grade: it is tested to be free of defects and made without excess heat or chemicals. Bottles marked “olive oil”, “pure”, “light” or “cooking olive oil” are usually blends with refined oil, which cost less and taste of very little. Every pick here is extra virgin.
- Harvest date. Wirecutter says olive oil is best used within two years of the olive harvest, and that a harvest date is the only real way to tell how fresh a bottle is. “Best by” dates are much less useful. Many supermarket blends do not print one.
- The bottle. Light and air make oil go stale. Tinted glass, tins and bag-in-box containers protect it best. Plastic is fine if you use the oil up quickly: Wirecutter suggests finishing a plastic bottle within about three months.
- Where the olives grew. “Product of” a country means the olives were grown there. “Packed in” or “imported from” does not. A single-origin oil comes from one place, while many big brands blend olives from several countries.
One more label tip from Wirecutter: “first cold pressed” is old wording that almost every extra virgin oil still prints, so it does not set one oil apart.

What we left out, and why
Our three searches returned 183 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 30 of them, read the listing pages of 9 finalists, and named a winner and two runners-up in each search. We kept four and left out the same oils in other bottles:
- Pompeian Robust Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, a runner-up in our main search, and Pompeian Robust in a 16 fl oz bottle, a runner-up in our salad dressing search. Both are versions of our cooking pick.
- Bertolli Rich Taste in a 16.9 fl oz bottle and Atlas Moroccan in a 500 mL bottle, runners-up in our cooking search. Both are smaller bottles of our picks.
Wirecutter’s top pick, Graza Sizzle Extra Virgin Olive Oil, is in the comparison table so you can see it next to ours. It was on the shortlist in all three of our searches but did not make any final three. Wirecutter also recommends the Bertolli Rich Taste, our top pick.
How we researched
On September 25, 2026 we ran three live TwelveTabs searches of Amazon: “best olive oil”, “olive oil for cooking” and “olive oil for salad dressing”. Together they returned 183 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 10 from each search, read the listing pages of 9 finalists and named a winner and two runners-up in each. We kept four that each suit a different need, and left out the same oils in other sizes. AI wrote this guide from that research.
Listings change: we read them on September 25, 2026, and a bottle, blend or seller may differ today.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best olive oil for cooking?
The Pompeian Robust Extra Virgin Olive Oil won our cooking search, and its listing describes it for daily cooking and sautés. The Bertolli Rich Taste works for cooking too.
Is extra virgin olive oil better than regular olive oil?
For flavor, yes. Wirecutter explains that extra virgin is the top grade, while plain or “light” olive oil is usually a blend with refined oil and tastes of very little. Light oil is more neutral, if that is what you want.
How can you tell if olive oil is fresh?
Look for a harvest date and use the oil within two years of it. Buy a tinted bottle, tin or box, keep it somewhere cool and dark, and finish plastic bottles within a few months. Wirecutter notes that heat and light both speed up the loss of freshness.
Does “packed in Italy” mean the olives are Italian?
No. Wirecutter points out that “packed in” or “imported from” only tells you where the oil was bottled or shipped from. “Product of” is what tells you where the olives grew.
How did TwelveTabs choose these olive oils?
TwelveTabs ranked the Amazon listings for “best olive oil”, “olive oil for cooking” and “olive oil for salad dressing”, read the pages of 9 finalists and named a winner in each search. From those 183 listings, we kept the four that each suit a different need, as of September 25, 2026. We checked the advice against Wirecutter. TwelveTabs, our AI shopping agent, compared the Amazon listings, and AI wrote this guide from that research. To see what it picks today, run the search yourself with the button on this page.
