How to choose a flatware set
Serious Eats tested 13 flatware sets and turned what it learned into a short checklist.
- Steel grade. 18/10 stainless steel is 18% chromium and 10% nickel. Serious Eats says the chromium prevents rust and the nickel adds durability and shine, and that 18/10 is the most durable, dishwasher-safe choice. 18/8 has a little less nickel, and 18/0 has none. More nickel costs more.
- 18/0 can still work. Wirecutter says the only 18/0 set it recommends is IKEA’s Dragon set, which didn’t rust in its tests. A cheaper grade is not automatically a bad set.
- Weight and balance. Serious Eats found its favorite sets were the heavy ones, while thin, light flatware felt flimsy. If a handle is thin near the neck, the end should flare out to balance it.
- Five pieces per place setting. A place setting should include a salad fork, a dinner fork, a teaspoon, a soup spoon and a table knife. A 40-piece set is five pieces for 8 people; a 60-piece set is five for 12.
- Care. Most sets go in the dishwasher. Serious Eats advises a hot cycle, not eco mode, and never washing flatware next to aluminum or cast iron, which can leave rust marks. Some finishes need hand washing, including our black pick, so check the listing.

What we left out, and why
Our three searches returned 200 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 30 of them, read the listing pages of 9 finalists, and named a winner and runners-up in each search. We kept five and left out:
- A 45-piece silverware set for 8 with five serving utensils, sold by Givebest, a runner-up in our main search. It adds serving pieces, but our main search ranked it below our top pick, another stainless set for 8.
- A 60-piece silverware set for 12, sold by LONGLIFUJUNTENG, a runner-up in our service-for-12 search. Our search ranked it below our pick 3.
Wirecutter’s flatware guide recommends several sets by style rather than one top pick, so there is no Wirecutter pick in the table.
How we researched
On September 25, 2026 we ran three live TwelveTabs searches of Amazon: “best flatware set”, “18/10 stainless steel flatware set” and “flatware set service for 12”. Together they returned 200 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 30 of them, read the listing pages of 9 finalists and named a winner and runners-up in each. We kept five sets that each suit a different table, and left out two sets that another pick already covers. AI wrote this guide from that research.
Listings change: we read them on September 25, 2026, and a finish, piece count or seller may differ today.
