Every Nespresso machine brews from a capsule at the push of a button. Serious Eats, which tested almost every model, is honest that Nespresso is likely not for serious coffee people. It is about convenience: a capsule and a button. The big choice is which of the two capsule systems you want.

  • Original or Vertuo. Original machines take one standard capsule size and brew single espresso and lungo shots, with some adding a ristretto. Serious Eats found they power on, heat up and brew in under a minute. Vertuo machines read a barcode on each capsule and brew the size it calls for, from a single or double espresso up to a full cup of coffee. They took about a minute and a half to two minutes per cup in Serious Eats’ timing.
  • Capsules you can buy. Serious Eats notes that Original capsules are a standard size, so other coffee brands and store brands make them too. Vertuo capsules are Nespresso’s own. If you want choice, Original gives you more.
  • Coffee size. If you drink a big mug in the morning, Vertuo is the one to get: a Vertuo coffee is about 7.7 ounces, and some Vertuo models, including the Vertuo Next, also brew extra-large 12 ounce altos and 18 ounce carafes.
  • Milk. Some machines have a milk system built in; others come in a bundle with an Aeroccino, a separate milk frother. A bundle is the simplest way to add lattes. Serious Eats’ favorite milk machine was a Lattissima with a built-in system, but our searches did not turn up one on Amazon that beat these picks.
