The top picks

Our top pick for most readers is the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. It won the main TwelveTabs search we ran for this guide, “best kindle”, out of 16 Amazon listings. It is a dedicated e-reader with a 7-inch glare-free screen and weeks of battery life, and it suits anyone who reads books more than anything else on a screen.

Read in bed? The Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition won our night reading search, with a front light that adjusts itself. To write notes, the Kindle Scribe won our note taking search. And for notes and highlights in color, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is the color version. To draw or sketch instead, see our drawing tablet guide.

How to choose a Kindle

Every Kindle reads the same Kindle books. What changes is the screen size, the light, the storage and whether you can write on it. These four things matter most.

  • Screen size. The Paperwhite and Colorsoft have 7-inch screens, sized for reading books. The Scribe models have 11-inch screens for writing and reading documents.
  • The light. WIRED, which tested every current Kindle, prefers the Paperwhite over the basic Kindle for night reading because of its warm light, which it calls easier on the eyes before bed. The Signature Edition adds a light that adjusts to the room by itself.
  • Writing. Only the Scribe models take a pen. WIRED names the Scribe its pick for students and note takers, for handwritten notes and for marking up documents.
  • Color. Colorsoft models have a color e-paper screen for covers, comics and highlights. WIRED notes that the Colorsoft’s main upgrade is the color screen itself, with few other new features, so it is worth it only if you will use color.

One more thing from WIRED: Amazon sells some Kindles with ads on the lock screen and others without. WIRED’s advice: if you would pay to remove the ads from a standard Paperwhite, look at the Signature Edition instead, which has no lock-screen ads to remove and adds its extra features.

What we left out, and why

Our three searches returned 48 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 25 of them, read the listing pages of 11 finalists, and named a winner and runners-up in each search. We kept four and left out:

  • Amazon Fire HD 10 and Fire HD 8 tablets, runners-up in our main search. They are tablets for apps and video, not e-readers, and our search ranked them below the Paperwhite for having no glare-free e-ink screen.
  • Like-New refurbished Paperwhite and Scribe models, runners-up in our night reading and note taking searches. They are refurbished versions of our picks.
  • Kindle Scribe 64GB (older model), a runner-up in our note taking search. Our search ranked it below the newest Scribe as older hardware.

Wirecutter’s top pick, the Amazon Kindle (2024), is in the comparison table so you can see it next to ours. Wirecutter says Amazon’s entry-level 2024 Kindle is the best e-reader for almost everyone. It was on our main search’s shortlist but did not make the final three.

How we researched

On September 25, 2026 we ran three live TwelveTabs searches of Amazon: “best kindle”, “kindle for reading at night” and “kindle for note taking”. Together they returned 48 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 25 of them, read the listing pages of 11 finalists and named a winner and runners-up in each. We kept four Kindles that each suit a different reader, and left out tablets, refurbished units and an older Scribe. AI wrote this guide from that research.

Listings change: we read them on September 25, 2026, and a model, storage size or seller may differ today.

Frequently asked questions

Which Kindle is best for most people?

The Kindle Paperwhite won our main search and is WIRED’s favorite. Wirecutter prefers the basic Kindle, Amazon’s entry-level model, so if you read mostly in daylight, that is a fair choice too.

What is the best Kindle for reading at night?

The Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition won our night reading search. Its front light adjusts itself, and WIRED likes the Paperwhite’s warm light before bed.

Is the Kindle Scribe worth it?

If you write notes, mark up documents or sketch, yes: it is the only Kindle that takes a pen. If you only read books, a Paperwhite is smaller and lighter to carry.

Are Kindles waterproof?

WIRED lists the Paperwhite and Colorsoft models as IPX8 waterproof. Check the listing for the exact model before you read by the pool.

How did TwelveTabs choose these Kindles?

TwelveTabs ranked the Amazon listings for “best kindle”, “kindle for reading at night” and “kindle for note taking”, read the pages of 11 finalists and named a winner in each search. From those 48 listings, we kept the four that each suit a different need, as of September 25, 2026. We checked the advice against WIRED and Wirecutter. TwelveTabs, our AI shopping agent, compared the Amazon listings, and AI wrote this guide from that research. To see what it picks today, run the search yourself with the button on this page.
