How to choose a pillow when you sleep on your side

When you lie on your side, your shoulder holds your head up off the mattress. The pillow’s job is to fill that gap so your neck stays level with the rest of your spine: neck and spine in one straight line, shoulders and hips stacked, and the pillow under your neck, not your shoulder. Five things decide whether a pillow can do that for you.

  • Height (loft). Loft is how tall the pillow is, which is not the same as how firm it is. The Sleep Foundation notes that side sleepers tend to need a high-loft pillow to fill the space under the head and neck, and that your ideal loft also depends on the size of your head.
  • Adjustable or fixed. A shredded memory foam pillow has a zip, so you can take fill out or put it back. A shaped foam pillow gives you one or two set heights. With an adjustable pillow, a good place to start is to take out about a quarter of the fill, then adjust from there.
  • Shape. Most pillows are a plain rectangle. A contour pillow has a raised curve under the neck. A crescent pillow curves around the shoulder.
  • Heat. The Sleep Foundation says memory foam tends to sleep warmer than other fills, because it hugs close to your head. Cooling covers and shredded or ventilated foam are how makers try to fix that.
