The top picks

Our top pick for most commutes is the MATEIN Travel Laptop Backpack. It won the main TwelveTabs search we ran for this guide, “best backpack for work”, out of 29 Amazon listings. It has a 15.6 inch laptop compartment, organized pockets, water-resistant fabric, a hidden anti-theft pocket and a USB port on the outside, so it suits anyone who carries a laptop to the office every day. Prefer a tote, briefcase or shoulder bag to a backpack? See our laptop bags for women guide.

For a women’s work bag, the LOVEVOOK Laptop Backpack with a tumbler pocket won our women’s search. If you carry a 17 inch laptop, the SHRRADOO Extra Large backpack fits one. And for work trips by plane, the Taygeer Travel Laptop Backpack is sold as airplane approved. Still choosing the laptop to carry? See our laptops for work guide.

  • Its listing describes a dedicated 15.6 inch laptop compartment and several organized storage sections.
  • It is made of water-resistant polyester, with padded shoulder straps.
  • It has a hidden anti-theft pocket and an outside USB charging port.

Drawbacks

  • It is styled as a travel and college bag, and our women’s search noted it lacks work styling.
  • The USB port needs your own power bank inside the bag (our inference).

Watch for this: MATEIN also sells a Business Laptop Backpack under a near-identical title. It won our work and travel search. We kept this one because it won our main search.

Skip it if you want a bag that looks like a briefcase.

How to choose a backpack for work

A work backpack carries the same things every day: a laptop, a charger, a water bottle and a few small things you need to find fast. For the bottle, see our Hydro Flask guide; for a battery pack, our Anker power bank guide. Carrying gym gear to the office too? See our gym bag guide.

  • Laptop size. Check the size your laptop compartment fits, in inches. Three of our picks fit 15.6 inch laptops; the SHRRADOO fits up to 17 inches.
  • Organization. Carryology, a site about bags, calls good organization and easy access crucial in a work bag, because they affect how well you work through the day. Count the pockets you will really use.
  • Size, in liters. Nomads Nation, a travel site, lists work bags by liters, down to a compact 14 liter bag for a 13 inch laptop. A bag for a trip runs much bigger; our SHRRADOO pick is 52 liters. Bigger is heavier to carry.
  • Comfort and weather. Carryology also names durability, comfort and weather resistance. Look for padded straps and water-resistant fabric, which our top two picks name in their listings.
  • Security and charging. Some bags add a hidden pocket for a wallet or passport, and a USB port on the outside. The port passes power through from a battery pack you put inside (our inference: none of these listings names a battery).

What we left out, and why

Our three searches returned 76 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 30 of them, read the listing pages of 9 finalists, and named a winner and runners-up in each search. We kept four and left out:

  • MATEIN Business Laptop Backpack, the winner of our work and travel search. It is a second MATEIN 15.6 inch laptop backpack, the same brand and type as our top pick.
  • LOVEVOOK Laptop Backpack for Women, a runner-up in our main and women’s searches. It is a second LOVEVOOK women’s work backpack, the same need as our pick 2.

Wirecutter’s laptop backpack guide names no single top pick. It lists five, led by the Troubadour Apex Backpack 4.0 as a polished bag for the office, with others from Timbuk2, July, Everlane and Aer. None came up as a finalist in our three searches, so none is in the comparison table.

How we researched

On September 25, 2026 we ran three live TwelveTabs searches of Amazon: “best backpack for work”, “women's backpack for work” and “backpack for work and travel”. Together they returned 76 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 30 of them, read the listing pages of 9 finalists and named a winner and runners-up in each. We kept four that suit different workdays, and left out a second backpack from two of our picks' makers. AI wrote this guide from that research.

Listings change: we read them on September 25, 2026, and a color, size or seller may differ today. Check your laptop's size against each listing.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best backpacks for work?

The MATEIN Travel Laptop Backpack won our main search. For a women’s work bag, the LOVEVOOK with a tumbler pocket won our women’s search.

What size backpack fits a laptop?

Match the laptop compartment to your laptop’s screen size. Most of our picks fit 15.6 inches; the SHRRADOO fits up to 17. Nomads Nation lists compact work bags from about 14 liters.

Is a laptop backpack better than a briefcase?

It spreads the weight across both shoulders and leaves your hands free. Carryology stresses comfort and easy access in a work bag. A briefcase looks more formal.

Can a work backpack be a carry-on?

Many can. The Taygeer is sold as airplane approved, but airlines set their own size limits, so check yours.

How did TwelveTabs choose these backpacks?

TwelveTabs ranked the Amazon listings for “best backpack for work”, “women’s backpack for work” and “backpack for work and travel”, read the pages of 9 finalists and named a winner in each search. From those 76 listings, we kept the four that each suit a different need, as of September 25, 2026. We checked the advice against Carryology and Nomads Nation. TwelveTabs, our AI shopping agent, compared the Amazon listings, and AI wrote this guide from that research. To see what it picks today, run the search yourself with the button on this page.
