The top picks
- A 572 sq in grill with a built-in meat probe: Traeger Pro 22 Wood Pellet Grill & Smoker
- A two-tier 885 sq in grill with Wi-Fi control: Traeger Ironwood 885 Wood Pellet Grill & Smoker
- A portable grill you can latch shut and carry: Pit Boss 150 Wood Pellet Grill & Smoker
- High-heat searing up to 749°F in a 380 sq in grill: recteq RT-B380 Bullseye Pellet Grill
Our top pick is the Traeger Pro 22 Wood Pellet Grill & Smoker, a 572 square inch pellet grill with a built-in meat probe. We read 32 organic Amazon listings for “pellet grill”, compared the pages of 10 finalists and kept four that differ in size, controls and heat.
For app control on two tiers, see the Traeger Ironwood 885. The Pit Boss 150 is a portable grill, and the recteq Bullseye lists a 749°F top temperature for searing. Several of the biggest sellers are not picks, because one review total covers more than one model.

How to choose a pellet grill
SmokedBBQSource and Bon Appetit agree on a short list of things that matter. Here is what to check.
- Cooking area. SmokedBBQSource says to think about how many people you cook for and whether you smoke large cuts. It also says to compare the primary cooking area with the total, because secondary racks are not always usable for taller items. Our picks list 256, 380, 572 and 885 sq in.
- Temperature range. Bon Appetit wants a range that runs from low and slow at 225°F or lower to regular grilling at 450°F, and preferably hotter for a hard sear. The listings here give the top end: 500°F for the Traeger Ironwood 885, 749°F for the recteq Bullseye and up to 1,000°F of direct heat from the Pit Boss 150 flame broiler.
- Temperature stability. Bon Appetit says a pellet grill should hold a steady temperature for hours with no help from you. A listing cannot show that. It can only name the controller, such as the Digital Pro Controller on the Traeger Pro 22 or the D2 controller on the Ironwood.
- Hopper size. SmokedBBQSource says a 40 pound hopper gives around 40 hours at standard smoking temperatures, so an 18 pound hopper is a problem for a 20-hour cook. Cold weather burns more fuel. The Pro 22 lists 18 lb and the recteq Bullseye lists 15 lb.
- Wi-Fi and probes. SmokedBBQSource lists Wi-Fi as a way to watch and control the grill from anywhere, and says models carry from one to four meat probes. Of our four, the Ironwood 885 names app control and the Pro 22 names a built-in probe.
- Build and clean-up. SmokedBBQSource says the fire pot, flame deflector, drip pan and grates matter most for longevity, and that ash must be cleared from the burn pot regularly. Powder-coated steel needs a high-quality coating, or it rusts once the paint chips.
What we left out, and why
Of the 32 organic listings we read, ten had their pages read in full and four became picks. Thermometers, wood pellets and plug-in electric grills were dropped first. The rest were left out for a reason a shopper can check.
- Z GRILLS ZPG-450A2. The best-known budget brand here, but one review total is shared by three Z Grills listings with different model names, so we could not tie the figures to one grill
- Z GRILLS 600D. A review on its page describes a Z Grills tabletop model, so its figures are not clearly this grill’s
- Traeger Pro 780. A second Traeger with Wi-Fi. We kept the Ironwood 885 for app control
- Traeger Woodridge Pro. A third Traeger that adds no need the kept Traegers miss
- Pit Boss 440 Mahogany. Its page had no feature bullets, only a facts table, so we had no listing facts to write a pick from
- Ninja Woodfire ProConnect Premium XL. An electric grill that uses wood pellets for flavor, which is a different product. Its review total is also far above the same Ninja line’s other listing, and its selected options name an XL grill with thermometer and app
Wirecutter was not read for this guide, so there is no Wirecutter pick in the comparison table.
How we researched
On October 1, 2026 we read 32 organic Amazon listings for "pellet grill" across two pages of results. AI compared them, set aside sponsored repeats, thermometers, wood pellets and plug-in electric grills, read the pages of 10 finalists and chose four pellet grills that differ in size, controls and heat. AI wrote this guide from that research.
Listings change: we read them on October 1, 2026, and a color, bundle, seller or stock may differ today. Specs are the listing text as we read it, which our reading tool cut to about 200 characters per bullet, so a feature such as Wi-Fi or a meat probe may exist even where that text does not name it. The two Pit Boss pages we read gave no spec table to check against.
Prices, ratings and review counts come from Amazon and were read on October 1, 2026.

Frequently asked questions
How much cooking area do you need?
SmokedBBQSource says to start with how many people you cook for and whether you plan large cuts, and to check the primary area as well as the total. A small portable grill like the Pit Boss 150 lists 256 sq in. The Traeger Ironwood 885 lists 885 sq in across two tiers.
Can a pellet grill sear a steak?
Bon Appetit wants a pellet grill that covers 225°F or lower for smoking, 450°F for grilling and preferably hotter for a hard sear. The recteq Bullseye lists 749°F, and the Pit Boss 150 lists a flame broiler for direct heat up to 1,000°F.
How long does a hopper of pellets last?
SmokedBBQSource says a 40 pound hopper gives around 40 hours at standard smoking temperatures, and that a colder climate uses more fuel. Smaller hoppers need refilling on long cooks.
How did TwelveTabs choose these pellet grills?
We compared the Amazon results for one search phrase, set aside sponsored repeats, thermometers, wood pellets, plug-in electric grills and listings whose review total is shared across models, and read each finalist’s page for its size, controls and heat. Each pick is a grill a shopper can buy new today, matched to a different need.
