The top picks

Our top pick is the SafeRest Waterproof Mattress Protector, a fitted, sheet-style cover whose item details list a cotton-blend terry surface over a polyurethane layer. We read 116 Amazon result cards for “mattress cover”, set aside sponsored repeats and padded covers, and compared 11 product pages. Four covers stayed. In this guide a mattress cover is a mattress protector: a fitted, sheet-style cover or a zippered cover that wraps the mattress, sold to guard it from spills and stains. Quilted pads, toppers and pillow-top covers add padding instead, and they are left out.

For a deep-pocket terry top, the Utopia Bedding Fitted Waterproof Mattress Protector. For a zippered cover that wraps all sides, the Utopia Bedding Zippered Waterproof Mattress Encasement. For a zippered cover titled for a mattress and box spring, the Amazon Basics Mattress and Box Spring Protector. Wirecutter’s top mattress pick is in the table too.

How to choose a mattress cover

Sleep Doctor and Mattress Clarity both rank protectors, and their advice shapes this list. Each pick is judged on what its own listing says, and a waterproof label appears here only where the listing carries it.

  • Fitted or zippered. Sleep Doctor says fitted protectors work like a fitted sheet, are easy to put on and take off, and suit people who expect to wash often. It says encasements fully enclose the mattress on all six sides, which can be more of a hassle to fit and remove. The SafeRest Waterproof Mattress Protector and the Utopia Bedding Fitted Waterproof Mattress Protector are fitted. The Utopia Bedding Zippered Waterproof Mattress Encasement and the Amazon Basics Mattress and Box Spring Protector are zippered.
  • Fit and depth. Sleep Doctor says fitted covers have elasticized pockets whose depth varies by maker, and encasements have a maximum height, so check your mattress against the number. Our picks reach 15 to 18 inches.
  • Waterproof layer and fabric. Sleep Doctor says waterproof protectors usually have a thin plastic layer, and that cotton is soft and breathable while polyester is thinner, tighter and less breathable. Mattress Clarity says its picks weigh durability, ease of use, water protection and the quality of materials.
  • Noise. Mattress Clarity praises one protector for making no noise under the sheets. Several listings here call the cover quiet or noiseless.
  • Care. Sleep Doctor says most covers go in the washer in cold or warm water on a gentle cycle and can be tumble dried low, without fabric softener. Every pick here lists machine washing.

Looking for padding rather than protection? See our dorm mattress toppers guide, or our mattresses guide if the bed itself needs replacing.

What we left out, and why

We read 116 search cards, 96 distinct organic listings and 101 distinct products, then read the pages of 11 product listings. We kept four and left out:

  • Mattress pads and toppers. The quilted pad with 16-inch pockets says in its own listing that it is not liquid proof, and the pillow-top pad, the cooling pad and the bamboo topper add padding rather than protection. Sleep Foundation reviews them in a separate list of mattress pads.
  • A second Utopia Bedding fitted protector in a bamboo blend, and a Utopia twin encasement for 6-inch beds. Each repeats the brand and type of a kept Utopia pick.
  • Other sizes of the SafeRest and Utopia covers. They share one review total with the pick we kept.

Wirecutter’s top mattress pick, the AllerEase Platinum Zip-Off Top Mattress Protector, is in the table. It has a removable zip-off top and a listing that calls the top waterproof-backed, so it fits this guide’s definition of a protector. It did not appear among the cards we read, so it is not one of our picks.

How we researched

On October 5, 2026 we read the first two pages of Amazon's results for “mattress cover”: 116 result cards, 19 of them sponsored, and 101 distinct products. AI compared them, set aside sponsored repeats and padded covers such as quilted pads, pillow-top pads and toppers, read the product pages of 10 contenders and Wirecutter's top pick through a data provider, and chose four protectors whose listings describe a fitted or zippered cover. AI wrote this guide from that research.

Listings change: we read them on October 5, 2026, and a size, color or seller may differ today. Product listings came through a data provider, not a page read in a browser, so they carry no star breakdown, sales counts, Amazon summaries, review text or Prime badge. The listing text we kept is partial, and a feature it does not name may still exist. Each listing we read opens on a queen size, and a waterproof label is repeated only where the listing carries it.

Prices, ratings and review counts come from Amazon and were read on October 5, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mattress protector and a mattress pad?

Sleep Doctor describes a protector as a thin cover that keeps dirt, sweat and other fluids off a mattress. Pads and toppers add cushioning, and Sleep Foundation reviews them in a separate list. The quilted pad in our results says in its listing that it is not liquid proof.

Should you choose a fitted or a zippered cover?

Sleep Doctor says fitted covers are easier to put on and take off and suit frequent washing, while encasements wrap all six sides and can be more of a hassle. The SafeRest Waterproof Mattress Protector is fitted, and the Utopia Bedding Zippered Waterproof Mattress Encasement is zippered.

How often should you wash a mattress cover?

Sleep Doctor says to wash one every one to two months with normal wear, in cold or warm water on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry low without fabric softener. Check each listing’s care line first.
