Here a travel bag for women means a backpack, duffel, tote or messenger that a woman can carry on a trip and that its listing or Amazon's own summary ties to travel or airline use. Wheeled suitcases are left out. Our [carry-on luggage guide](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-carry-on-luggage/) covers those. ## How to choose a travel bag for women Wirecutter, Fashion Jackson and A Well Styled Life each say what to look at. - **Check the size against your airline.** A Well Styled Life says many regional airlines have stricter carry-on size limits. The [LOVEVOOK backpack](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-1) lists 18 x 14 x 8 inches and names Spirit, Frontier and JetBlue. The [Overnight Weekender Duffel](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-3) lists 21.65 inches on its long side, so check your airline's limit before you rely on it as a personal item. - **Pick the shape you will carry.** Wirecutter's carry-on guide covers backpacks and names a small pick and a large pick. Fashion Jackson separates carry-on totes and personal item bags from luggage. Our five picks are a backpack, two duffels, a messenger and a tote. - **Look at weight and straps.** Fashion Jackson calls lightness imperative, since the bag itself should not be heavy. A Well Styled Life looks for lightweight materials and comfortable straps. - **Look at pockets and closures.** Fashion Jackson wants the right compartments, zippers and slots. A Well Styled Life looks for plenty of pockets and a secure zip-top closure. The [LOVEVOOK backpack](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-1) and the [Overnight Weekender Duffel](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-3) each list a wet pocket. - **Think about durability.** Fashion Jackson wants a bag that holds up through security lines, overhead bins and rough handling. Amazon's own summaries list durability as mixed for the [BAGSMART Travel Duffle](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-2) and the [Travelon messenger](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-4). - **Check how it rides on a suitcase.** The [Overnight Weekender Duffel](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-3) lists an integrated trolley sleeve, and Amazon's own summary says the [BAGSMART Puffy Tote](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-5) can slide over luggage handles. ## Our picks in detail ### 1. LOVEVOOK 40L Travel Backpack: best carry-on backpack **Why it made the list** - The listing gives the size as 18 x 14 x 8 inches and says it fits under the seat or in the overhead bin, naming Spirit, Frontier and JetBlue. - It lists 40L, four compartments, three extra packing cubes and a built-in wet pocket. - It has a suitcase-style opening and a padded electronics compartment. **Drawbacks** - It is listed for women and men, so it is not cut for a woman's frame. - One review in the text we read says there may be almost too many compartments. **Watch for this:** A second listing from the same maker in the search results has a different review total. We read the page for the one we picked. **Skip it if** you want a bag that looks like a purse. The [BAGSMART Puffy Tote](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-5) is a tote. ### 2. BAGSMART Travel Duffle Bag: best duffel for the seat in front of you **Why it made the list** - Amazon's own summary calls it perfect for travel, particularly as a personal item that fits under the plane seat. - It lists the bag as spacious, with plenty of zipper compartments and a lightweight design. - It lists quality, size and versatility as positive. **Drawbacks** - Amazon's own summary lists durability as mixed, with some reporting the straps falling apart after use. - The page has no bullet list in the text we read, so closures and dimensions are unconfirmed. **Watch for this:** Other listings with the same title in the search results carry the same review total. They are other sizes and colors of this bag, so we treat it as one product. **Skip it if** you want a trolley sleeve. The [Overnight Weekender Duffel](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-3) lists one. ### 3. Overnight Weekender Duffel Bag for Women: best for a 3 to 5 day trip **Why it made the list** - The listing says 30 L, suited to a 3 to 5 day trip. - It lists an integrated trolley sleeve that slides over a rolling luggage handle, and a removable adjustable strap. - It lists a dry and wet separated design with six pockets. **Drawbacks** - The title names no maker. - At 21.65 inches on the long side, it may be too long for an under-seat limit (our inference from the listed dimensions). **Skip it if** you need a strict personal-item size. The [LOVEVOOK backpack](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-1) lists dimensions with airline names. ### 4. Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Messenger Bag: best anti-theft messenger **Why it made the list** - Amazon's own summary calls it perfect for international travel, with lots of zippered pockets and plenty of space. - It lists security features as positive, and says it works well in airports. - It says the bag is big enough to hold a Kindle. **Drawbacks** - Amazon's own summary lists durability as mixed, with some reporting the strap breaking within days. - One critical review in the text we read calls it smaller than expected. **Skip it if** you need to pack a change of clothes. The [LOVEVOOK backpack](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-1) lists 40L. ### 5. BAGSMART Puffy Tote Bag: best light tote **Why it made the list** - Amazon's own summary calls it a size that is not too big or too small, with plenty of pockets. - It says the bag is easy to travel with, since it can slide over luggage handles. - It lists quality, durability and versatility as positive, for work and school as well as travel. **Drawbacks** - No bullet list was in the text we read, so the closure and size are unconfirmed. - It is described for work and school as well as travel. **Watch for this:** Another listing with the same title carries the same review total. It is another color of this tote, so we treat it as one product. **Skip it if** you need a bag that closes all the way. Check the closure on the page. ## What we left out, and why We read 120 result cards across two pages of "travel bag for women". 24 were sponsored, and we skipped them. From the organic listings we chose 10 contenders by review count, with a spread of product types, and read the Amazon page of each. We kept five. Five were left out: - **MATEIN Travel Laptop Backpack.** Already a pick in our backpacks for work guide. - **Taygeer Travel Backpack for Women.** It shares its review total with the Taygeer pick in our backpacks for work guide, and critical reviews in the text we read say a different bag arrived. - **The North Face Women's Jester Everyday.** A review on its page names the Jester Luxe, a different model, so its review total may cover two bags. - **Gym Bag for Women, Personal Item Travel Bag.** Already a pick in our gym bags guide. - **WATERFLY Crossbody Sling Backpack.** Amazon ranks it as a men's cross-body sling bag. Wirecutter's guide is a list of carry-on travel backpacks. Its top pick, the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Del Dia Travel Pack, did not turn up in the Amazon results we searched, so there is no Wirecutter pick in the comparison table. ## Questions people ask ### What is the best travel bag for women? For most trips, the [LOVEVOOK 40L Travel Backpack](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-1), whose listing gives airline-style dimensions and lists packing cubes. For a lighter bag under the seat, the [BAGSMART Travel Duffle](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-travel-bags-for-women/#pick-2). ### What size bag is allowed as a personal item? It depends on the airline. A Well Styled Life says many regional airlines have stricter carry-on size limits, so check yours. See our [backpacks for work guide](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-backpacks-for-work/). ### Backpack or duffel for travel? Wirecutter's carry-on guide is built around backpacks and splits them into small and large. Fashion Jackson also covers totes and duffels. A backpack frees your hands, and a duffel is easier to pack and pull out of an overhead bin. ### How did TwelveTabs choose these travel bags? We compared the Amazon results for one search phrase, set aside sponsored repeats and listings whose review total described a different bag, and read each finalist's page for its shape, size and features. Each pick is a bag a shopper can buy new today. ## How we researched On October 2, 2026 we read 120 Amazon result cards for "travel bag for women" across two pages of results. AI compared them, set aside sponsored repeats, read the pages of 10 finalists and chose five bags that a listing or Amazon's own summary ties to travel or airline use. AI wrote this guide from that research. Listings change: we read them on October 2, 2026, and a size, color, seller or stock may differ today. Specs are the listing text as we read it, which the collector cut to about 200 characters per bullet, and three of the ten pages carry no bullet list, so a feature past that text may still be on the page. Wirecutter's page is a guide to carry-on backpacks, and its top pick is not in the Amazon results we searched. ### Sources - [Wirecutter: The Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-carry-on-travel-bags/) - [Fashion Jackson: Best Travel Bags for Women](https://fashionjackson.com/best-travel-bags/) - [A Well Styled Life: Best Travel Bags and Suitcases for Women](https://awellstyledlife.com/best-travel-bags-and-suitcases-for-women/)
