It won our main search: a complete Callaway package set made for beginners, with a lightweight stand bag, in men's and women's versions. - **A well-known brand:** Wilson Tour Velocity Complete Golf Set with Stand Bag. A runner-up in our main search: a starter package from an established brand, with standard clubs and a stand bag that has a slot for each club. - **The most pieces:** PGF Golf Gold TP 17-Piece Golf Club Package Set. A runner-up in our main search: a 17-piece package of graphite-shaft clubs with headcovers, in regular flex, for men and women. - **A women's set:** Precise M5 Women's Golf Club Set. A runner-up in our women's search: a complete women's set with a titanium driver, a fairway wood, a hybrid, cavity-back irons, a putter and a stand bag. Our top pick for most new golfers is the **[Callaway Strata Complete Golf Set](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-starter-golf-clubs/#pick-1)**. It won the main TwelveTabs search we ran for this guide, "best starter golf club set", out of 21 Amazon listings. It is a complete package set made for beginners, with a lightweight stand bag, and it comes in men's and women's versions, so it suits anyone who wants one box with everything they need for the course. If you want a name you know, the **[Wilson Tour Velocity](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-starter-golf-clubs/#pick-2)** set comes with a stand bag that has a slot for each club. For the most pieces in one box, the **[PGF Golf Gold TP](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-starter-golf-clubs/#pick-3)** set has 17, with graphite shafts and headcovers. And for a women's set, the **[Precise M5 Women's](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-starter-golf-clubs/#pick-4)** set was a runner-up in our women's search. ## How to choose starter golf clubs A new golfer does not need a full bag of fitted clubs. A complete set gives you a driver, a few irons, a putter and a bag, and lets you learn what you actually use. - **Forgiveness first.** Golf Monthly says the best sets for beginners are designed to be as forgiving as possible, so an off-center hit still goes somewhere useful. Look for large clubfaces, cavity-back irons and hybrids. - **Hybrids over long irons.** Golf Monthly notes that forgiving woods and hybrids get the ball in the air easily, and that some sets swap the hard-to-hit 5-iron for a hybrid. Golf Insider UK, a coaching site, points to hybrids and deep cavity-back irons for forgiveness and high launch. - **Hand, flex and length.** Golf Insider UK matches beginner sets to budget, height and swing speed. Check that the set is for your hand (left or right), the shaft flex suits a slower swing (regular is the usual start) and the length fits your height. - **Men's or women's.** Women's sets usually have lighter, shorter clubs. Our top pick and our pick 4 both come in women's versions. - **What is in the box.** A piece count can include the bag and headcovers, not only clubs. Read what each set contains. ## Our picks in detail ### 1. Callaway Strata Complete Golf Set: best overall **Why it made the list** - It won our main search, "best starter golf club set", from 21 listings. - Its listing describes a complete package set made for beginner and novice golfers. - It comes with a lightweight stand bag with plenty of storage. - Golf Monthly names the Strata men's package its best set choice for beginners. **Drawbacks** - It is not fitted to your height or swing (our inference: a boxed set comes in standard lengths). - Callaway sells it in several versions under one title, which is easy to mix up. **Watch for this:** our two searches found the Strata set under four listings with the same title: 9, 11 and 14 pieces, and a women's version that won our women's search. Check the piece count, hand and men's or women's before you buy. **Skip it if** you already know you want fitted clubs. ### 2. Wilson Tour Velocity Complete Golf Set: best from a well-known brand **Why it made the list** - It was a runner-up in our main search. - Our search picked it out as a starter package from an established brand, with standard clubs. - Its stand bag has a slot for each club, which keeps them from tangling. **Drawbacks** - This listing is a men's, right-handed set only. - Its title gives little detail on which clubs are inside. **Skip it if** you play left-handed. ### 3. PGF Golf Gold TP 17-Piece Package Set: best for the most pieces **Why it made the list** - Its listing describes a 17-piece package of graphite-shaft clubs with headcovers. - It comes in regular flex, for men and women. **Drawbacks** - PGF is a less known name than Callaway or Wilson. - The 17 pieces include headcovers, so it has fewer clubs than the count suggests (our inference from its description). **Skip it if** you want a brand you can find in a golf shop. ### 4. Precise M5 Women's Golf Club Set: best women's set **Why it made the list** - It was a runner-up in our search for "women's golf club set for beginners", from 23 listings. - Its listing describes a titanium driver, a fairway wood, a hybrid, cavity-back irons and a putter. - A matching stand bag comes with it. **Drawbacks** - This listing is pink. Precise sells the same set in a men's version, which we left out. - Our women's search ranked the women's [Callaway Strata](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-starter-golf-clubs/#pick-1) above it. **Skip it if** you want the set that won our women's search: that is the women's [Callaway Strata](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-starter-golf-clubs/#pick-1). ## What we left out, and why Our two searches returned 44 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 20 of them, read the listing pages of 8 finalists, and named a winner and runners-up in each search. We kept four and left out: - **Three more Callaway Strata listings**: a 9-piece set, the women's 11-piece set that won our women's search, and a 14-piece set. They are our top pick in other versions. - **Precise M5 Men's Complete Golf Club Set**, a runner-up in our main search. It is the men's version of our pick 4. We did not find a Wirecutter guide to starter golf clubs. ## Questions people ask ### What are the best starter golf clubs? The [Callaway Strata Complete Golf Set](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-starter-golf-clubs/#pick-1) won our main search, and Golf Monthly also names it its best set for beginners. It comes in men's and women's versions. ### How many clubs does a beginner need? Fewer than a full bag. A complete set gives you a driver, a wood or hybrid, a few irons, a wedge and a putter. Golf Monthly favors sets that swap long irons for easier hybrids. ### Are complete golf sets good for beginners? Yes, for learning. Golf Monthly says beginner sets are designed to be as forgiving as possible. Once you play often, a fitting can tell you what to change. Sets rarely include balls, so see our [golf ball guide](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-golf-balls/). ### What flex should a beginner choose? Regular flex is the usual start for a slower swing. Golf Insider UK matches sets to swing speed and height, so check both. ### How did TwelveTabs choose these golf clubs?
