See our [work backpack guide](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-backpacks-for-work/). Here, a gym bag is a bag for carrying workout clothes and shoes to a workout: a duffel, a tote or a drawstring sackpack. Kids' bags, tactical backpacks and luggage sold under another name are not picks. ## How to choose a gym bag Women's Health, Men's Health and Wirecutter agree on a short list: what the bag is made of, how much it holds, and whether it keeps dirty gear apart from clean. - **Material.** Women's Health says polyester resists water, nylon is the most durable choice for heavy equipment, and neoprene holds its structure. Wirecutter's top bag uses 1,000-denier nylon, which it calls thicker than the fabric on other sport bags. The [Under Armour Undeniable 5.0 Duffle](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-1) lists TPU-coated, foam-lined panels, a different route to the same toughness. - **Size.** Women's Health puts a medium tote at about 15 liters, 25 to 30 liters at carry-on size and 30 to 35 liters at an overnight bag. The [Personal Item Travel Bag](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-6) lists 35 liters and the [Under Armour Undeniable 5.0 Duffle](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-1) lists 58. The [PUMA Contender Duffel](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-3) lists 21 by 10.5 by 9.5 inches, and the [adidas Alliance Sackpack](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-5) is only 2.25 inches deep. - **Compartments.** Men's Health looks for a bag that keeps clean gear apart from dirty clothes, and Women's Health says the right number of pockets depends on the trip, from one or two for running to as many as seven when you go from the office. The [Ultimate Gym Bag 2.0](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-2) counts 10 compartments, and its listing names a wet pocket and a full-length shoe pocket. - **Water resistance and the bottom.** Men's Health also weighs water resistance, odor control and reinforced bottoms that survive locker-room floors. The [adidas Defender 4.0 Duffel](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-4) lists a water-resistant base, and the [Ultimate Gym Bag 2.0](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-2) lists a water-resistant bottom panel. - **Warranty and carry.** Wirecutter's top bag has a lifetime warranty, and so does the [adidas Defender 4.0 Duffel](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-4), according to its listing. The [PUMA Contender Duffel](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-3) adds a removable strap and a locker loop. ## Our picks in detail ### 1. Under Armour Undeniable 5.0 Duffle: best tough duffel with a front organization pocket **Why it made the list** - Its listing gives a medium size of 58 liters, and says the bottom and side panels are TPU-coated and foam-lined for added durability and structure. - A large front zippered organization pocket and molle webbing are named, along with a large vented pocket for laundry or shoes. - The shoulder strap is padded and removable, and it stows in a side pocket. - Amazon's own summary lists quality, size, storage capacity, durability and appearance as positives. **Drawbacks** - A 1-star snippet, written in Japanese, says it tore quickly. - The 58-liter medium is large for a visit that needs only a change of clothes. That is our inference from the size. **Watch for this:** Amazon shows four result cards under this name at different prices, all with one total, so the figures cover every size and color. The page we read was the Medium. **Skip it if** you carry only a change of clothes. The [adidas Alliance Sackpack](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-5) is a lighter bag for that. ### 2. Ultimate Gym Bag 2.0 Duffel Bag: best for the most compartments **Why it made the list** - Its listing counts 10 compartments, with a large internal phone pocket, a key loop and two external zippered pockets. - A full-length shoe pocket fits up to a men's size 14, and a hidden water-resistant wet pocket holds swimsuits or sweaty clothes. - Two external mesh pouches fit a 32 oz bottle and a standard shaker. - Amazon's own summary lists size, pockets, capacity, design and gym-friendly as positives. **Drawbacks** - Amazon's own summary lists durability and zipper quality as mixed. - Amazon's summary says some owners had straps break after a few uses. **Watch for this:** Men's Health lists a bag with this name, the FocusGear [Ultimate Gym Bag 2.0](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-2). The Amazon title we kept names no brand, so treat them as the same bag only after you check the product page. **Skip it if** you want a plain, simple bag. This one is built around its pockets, and the [PUMA Contender Duffel](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-3) has one main compartment and a shoe pocket. ### 3. PUMA Contender Duffel Bag: best compact duffel with a shoe pocket **Why it made the list** - Its listing gives 21 by 10.5 by 9.5 inches for the gym, weekend trips or game day. - A built-in shoe pocket keeps footwear separate from the rest of the gear. - A removable shoulder strap and a locker loop give two ways to carry or hang it. - Amazon's own summary lists size, appearance, pockets and storage features as positives. **Drawbacks** - Amazon's own summary lists durability as mixed, with some owners saying it ripped after a week. - The listing says to spot clean it. **Watch for this:** PUMA also sells a kids' Evercat duffel, which Amazon shows with its own total. We left it out, and this pick is the adult Contender. **Skip it if** you carry a lot. The [Under Armour Undeniable 5.0 Duffle](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-1) is much larger. ### 4. adidas Defender 4.0 Gym Duffel Bag: best for a lifetime warranty **Why it made the list** - Its listing names a lifetime warranty. - The base is water resistant, and the main compartment is extra roomy. - Two zippered end pockets are named. - Amazon's own summary lists quality, size, space, durability and pockets as positives, and mentions separate shoe compartments. **Drawbacks** - The listing text we read gives no size in liters or inches. **Watch for this:** adidas sells other Defender duffels that Amazon shows with a separate total. This pick is the Defender 4.0, as the title reads. **Skip it if** you want the dimensions before you buy. The [PUMA Contender Duffel](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-3) lists its size in inches. ### 5. adidas Alliance Sackpack Drawstring Backpack: best light drawstring sackpack **Why it made the list** - Its listing names a drawstring opening that cinches closed fast. - A zippered front pocket holds a phone, keys, a wallet or an earbuds case apart from the clothes inside. - Drop-down mesh pockets hold a bottle, a shaker cup or a small umbrella. - It weighs under one pound empty. Amazon marks it #1 Best Seller in gym drawstring bags, a badge shown in the table. **Drawbacks** - It measures 14 by 2.25 by 18.25 inches, a slim bag that carries a light load. - The listing text we read names no shoe pocket. **Watch for this:** the listing says it is sized for kids 6 through 12, students, athletes and active adults, so check the size against what you carry. **Skip it if** you carry shoes and a towel every visit. A duffel such as the [PUMA Contender Duffel](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-3) holds more. ### 6. Gym Bag for Women, Personal Item Travel Bag with Shoes Compartment: best for a personal-item size **Why it made the list** - Its listing gives 35 liters at 18 by 8.7 by 13.5 inches, enough for 2 to 3 days of travel essentials. - A waterproof PVC-lined wet pocket separates damp items. - It says it fits personal item size restrictions. - A bottom shoe compartment has two vents. **Drawbacks** - A 3-star snippet says it is bigger than the writer expected and looks lumpy from the shoe compartment. - Another 3-star snippet says a small toiletries bag was missing from the box. **Watch for this:** the title text we kept names no brand, so check the seller on the page. Airline limits differ, so check your own airline's rule. **Skip it if** you want a bag made for the weight room. The [Under Armour Undeniable 5.0 Duffle](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-1) lists tougher panels. ## What we left out, and why We read 120 result cards across two pages of “gym bag”. 24 were sponsored, and we skipped them. The other 96 were 96 different listings, and we chose 10 contenders by review count, counting a color or size of the same bag once. We read the Amazon page of each and kept six. Four were left out, and a kids' duffel was dropped before we opened it: - **Fitgriff Gym Bag for Men & Women with Shoe & Wet Compartment (B07P8R34H7).** A second duffel with a wet pocket and a shoe pocket, which the [Ultimate Gym Bag 2.0](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-2) already covers. Four listings share its total. - **HOLYLUCK Drawstring Backpack Bag Sport Gym Sackpack (B072PR2ND1).** The same job as the [adidas Alliance Sackpack](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-5), and a 2-star snippet says a seam split two days in. - **DALIX 21" Blank Sports Duffle Bag Gym Bag Travel Duffel (B071WKSWD3).** A plain duffel with no need the [PUMA Contender Duffel](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-3) does not cover. Amazon's summary lists durability and construction as mixed, with a strap breaking on the first day. - **Lightweight Canvas Duffle Bags for Men & Women (B07V9XQ7JB).** Amazon's summary lists durability, zipper durability and construction as negatives, with holes and broken zippers within weeks. - **PUMA Kids' Evercat Transformation Duffel (B0792DV4JZ).** A kids' duffel, not an adult gym bag. Wirecutter's top pick is the KNKG Plus Duffel, which its page calls the best gym bag for organization and durability and says has been its top pick for five years running. We searched Amazon twice by name and found no KNKG listing, so it is not in the comparison table and has no link here. Wirecutter's other picks are the Aer Duffel Pack 3, the Aer Gym Tote 2, the Bellroy Lite Duffel and the Ortlieb Dry-Bag, and none of them is one of ours. ## Questions people ask ### What size gym bag do you need? Women's Health says a medium tote of about 15 liters fits a change of clothes, sneakers, a laptop and a bottle, and 25 to 30 liters is carry-on size. Of our picks, the [Personal Item Travel Bag](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-6) lists 35 liters, and the [Under Armour Undeniable 5.0 Duffle](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-1) lists 58. ### Is a duffel or a sackpack better for the gym? A sackpack such as the [adidas Alliance Sackpack](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-5) is slim and light, so it suits a change of clothes. A duffel holds shoes, a towel and a wet pocket, which is why most of our picks are duffels. ### How do you keep a gym bag from smelling? Men's Health looks for odor control and for a layout that keeps dirty clothes apart from clean ones. A vented or separate shoe pocket, such as the one on the [Personal Item Travel Bag](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/#pick-6), is one way to do that. ### How did TwelveTabs choose these gym bags? TwelveTabs, our AI shopping agent, compared Amazon's results for “gym bag”, read the pages of 10 contenders and named six picks, as of October 2, 2026. We checked the advice against Women's Health, Men's Health and Wirecutter. To see what it picks today, run the search yourself with the button on this page. ## How we researched On October 2, 2026 we read the first two pages of Amazon's results for “gym bag”: 120 result cards, 96 of them organic listings. AI compared them, read the Amazon pages of 10 contenders, set aside a second wet-pocket duffel, a second sackpack, two duffels with weak durability notes and a kids' duffel, and named 6 picks. AI wrote this guide from that research. Listings change: we read them on October 2, 2026, and a color, size or pack may differ today. The Amazon text we kept for each product is cut short, so a feature that is not named here may still be on the full page. Wirecutter's top pick, the KNKG Plus Duffel, did not appear in two Amazon searches by name, so it is not compared in the table. Size, pocket and warranty details appear only where the listing text we read names them. ### Sources - [Women's Health: The Best Gym Bags for Women](https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/g63175315/best-gym-bags-for-women/) - [Men's Health: The Best Gym Bags for Men](https://www.menshealth.com/style/g19548449/best-gym-bags-for-men/) - [Wirecutter: The Best Gym Bags](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-gym-bag/)
