Our top pick is the **[MESMOS 3-Piece Fancy Pen Set](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-graduation-gifts/#pick-1)**, three engraved metal pens in a gift-ready box, a keepsake a graduate can actually use. We read 96 Amazon listings for graduation gifts, compared 10 finalists and kept six that suit different kinds of grad. For a keepsake with a message, the [Dream Chaser Compass](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-graduation-gifts/#pick-2) is a brass compass with a card. The [She Believed She Could So She Did Mug](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-graduation-gifts/#pick-3) comes boxed and ready to hand over. For something funny, [The Sweet Smell of Finally Candle](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-graduation-gifts/#pick-4) is a lavender candle, and the [Mini Crochet Turtle](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-graduation-gifts/#pick-5) is a small keepsake with a card. To give cash, the [WenmthG Surprise Gift Box](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-graduation-gifts/#pick-6) turns it into a pop-out reveal. Wirecutter's graduation page is an unranked list of 42 gifts with no top pick, so there is no Wirecutter pick in the comparison table. ## How to choose a graduation gift Goody, Wirecutter and a crowd-sourced guide from Professor Off Duty each show a different side of the choice. - **Practical or keepsake.** Goody's opening mentions practical gifts like a suitcase alongside more coveted ones like silk pajamas. Professor Off Duty's list, gathered from recent grads, leans practical: a belt, a backpack and a travel duffel for a first job or move. - **A keepsake that marks the day.** Wirecutter's list groups many gifts by keepsake ideas, from a class ring to a keepsake box and personalized stationery, so a lasting memento is a common route. - **Cash, dressed up.** Wirecutter lists a metallic leather mini wallet as its "cash delivery system", so cash is still welcome when it is presented well. - **Range.** Goody's list of 30 gifts runs from small everyday items to a piece of luggage, so a gift exists at almost any level. - **Who the gift is for.** Some listings are aimed at women or at a level of school. Check the wording in the title before you buy. ## Our picks in detail ### 1. MESMOS 3-Piece Fancy Pen Set: best keepsake to use **Why it made the list** - Its listing describes three pastel pens, pink, purple and green, each laser-engraved with "Believe and Achieve". - Each has a metal barrel, German black ink and a Swiss-engineered 1 mm tip, per its listing. - It arrives in a gift-ready box. - Refills are available and the listing gives a lifetime replacement warranty. **Drawbacks** - It is marketed as a gift for her, and the pens are pink, purple and green. - The engraving is one fixed message, so it is not personalized. **Skip it if** you want something personalized or in neutral colors. ### 2. The Dream Chaser Compass: best keepsake for a grad heading somewhere new **Why it made the list** - Its listing describes a compass made of polished lacquered brass, built to last. - Giftable packaging comes with a greeting card already included. - An inspirational inscription is on it, and the listing says it suits men and women. **Drawbacks** - It is a desk keepsake, more art than navigation tool. The listing itself calls it a piece of art. - The inscription is fixed, so it is not personalized. **Skip it if** you want something the graduate will use every day. ### 3. She Believed She Could So She Did Graduation Mug Set: best boxed gift **Why it made the list** - Its listing describes a pink mug with the saying printed in gold. - A lid and a spoon come with it. - The mug holds 14 oz, and it comes in a sturdy gift box. **Drawbacks** - It is marketed to women, and the mug is pink. - A mug is a common gift, and a graduate may already have several. **Skip it if** you want something less common than a mug. ### 4. The Sweet Smell of Finally Graduation Candle: best funny gift **Why it made the list** - Its listing describes a funny message, "The sweet smell of finally", on a lavender-scented candle. - The listing says it suits high school, college, master's and doctoral graduates. - Burn time is listed at about 50 hours. - Professor Off Duty's crowd-sourced list of grad gifts includes a candle. **Drawbacks** - It is lavender only, and scents are a gamble for anyone who avoids them. - A candle burns down, so it is not a lasting keepsake. **Skip it if** you are not sure the graduate likes scented candles. ### 5. Mini Crochet Turtle Graduation Gift: best small keepsake **Why it made the list** - Its listing describes a handmade crochet turtle knitted from wool yarn. - It is about 2.3 by 1.4 by 3.5 inches and comes with a small card. - The listing suits every stage from preschool to college. **Drawbacks** - It is very small, at about 2.3 inches. - It is a decorative token that a graduate does not use. **Skip it if** you want a gift with real use. ### 6. WenmthG Graduation Surprise Gift Box for Money: best way to give cash **Why it made the list** - Its listing describes a pop-out surprise box for giving cash in a more exciting way. - The set has a main box, ten small exploding boxes, confetti, rubber bands and a manual. - It is themed in black and gold for graduation. **Drawbacks** - It holds no money, and the listing says so. - It has to be assembled, and the listing says the rubber bands can lose their elasticity in heat. **Watch for this:** the title mentions "money", but the box contains none. Plan to add your own cash. **Skip it if** you want a gift that is ready to give with no assembly. ## What we left out, and why We read 96 organic listings and the pages of 10 finalists. We kept six and left out: - **A crochet toast plush.** Another crochet keepsake next to the turtle. - **A second funny lavender candle.** A near-duplicate of the candle pick. - **A Squishmallows owl in a graduation cap.** A plush for kids, and its page also shows a used offer. - **A graduation blanket.** Its bullets talk about graduation blessings, but its review summary describes a different, flamingo-themed design, so we could not tell what the listing sells. ## Questions people ask ### What is a good gift for a high school or college graduate?
