It won our oversized bath sheet search: two extra large 35 by 70 inch sheets in heavy 700 GSM Turkish cotton. - **Drying fast:** JML Microfiber Bath Towel, 2 Pack, 30 x 60. A runner-up in our quick dry search: two full-size 30 by 60 inch microfiber bath towels with hanging loops and fast-drying fabric. - **Turkish cotton:** American Soft Linen Turkish Cotton Bath Towels, 4 Pack. A runner-up in our main search: a set of four full-size 100% Turkish cotton bath towels for everyday drying. - **Stocking a whole bathroom:** Utopia Towels 8-Piece Towel Set. A runner-up in our main search: eight ring-spun cotton towels in bath, hand and washcloth sizes, the most pieces of our picks. Our top pick for most bathrooms is the **[Amazon Basics 6-Piece Cotton Towel Set](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-bath-towels/#pick-1)**. It won the main TwelveTabs search we ran for this guide, "best bath towel", out of 56 Amazon listings. It is a 100% cotton set of two bath towels, two hand towels and two washcloths, made to resist fading, and it suits anyone replacing tired towels in one go. Want to wrap up completely? The **[White Classic bath sheets](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-bath-towels/#pick-2)** won our search for an oversized bath sheet. If towels never seem to dry in your bathroom, the **[JML microfiber bath towels](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-bath-towels/#pick-3)** dry fast. For four matching Turkish cotton towels, look at **American Soft Linen**. And to stock a whole bathroom at once, the **[Utopia Towels 8-piece set](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-bath-towels/#pick-5)** has the most pieces of our picks. ## How to choose a bath towel Most towels look alike in a listing photo. Three things set them apart: what they are made of, how heavy they are and how big they are. - **Weight, in GSM.** Peacock Alley, a linen maker, explains that towel weight is measured in grams per square meter. It puts light towels at 300 to 400 GSM, medium at 400 to 600 and heavy at 600 to 900, and says heavier towels are usually denser and more absorbent. Heavier also means slower to dry (our inference: there is more cotton to hold water). - **Cotton type.** Peacock Alley says Turkish cotton has extra-long fibers that give a towel a plush feel and extra durability. It also says plush, dense loops feel soft and absorbent, while lighter, short-looped fabric dries faster. Plain cotton works well too. - **Cotton or microfiber.** Microfiber is a thin synthetic fabric that dries fast and packs small. It feels smoother and less fluffy than cotton terry, so try one before you replace every towel in the house. - **Size.** Peacock Alley puts a standard bath towel at around 27 by 52 inches and a bath sheet at around 35 by 60, for people who want to wrap up fully after a shower. Our bath sheet pick is 35 by 70 inches. If your towel bar is short, a sheet may hang folded and dry more slowly. - **Pieces in the set.** A set with hand towels and washcloths matches from top to bottom. A pack of bath towels only suits a family that already has the small pieces. ## Our picks in detail ### 1. Amazon Basics 6-Piece Cotton Towel Set: best overall **Why it made the list** - It won our main search, "best bath towel", from 56 listings. - Its listing describes 100% cotton towels made to be soft, absorbent and fade-resistant. - One set covers a bathroom: two bath towels, two hand towels and two washcloths. **Drawbacks** - Two bath towels is not many for a family. You may need two sets (our inference from the piece count). - The title gives no GSM weight, so you cannot compare its thickness with our heavier picks. **Skip it if** you want an oversized, heavy towel to wrap up in. ### 2. White Classic Luxury Bath Sheets: best for full-body coverage **Why it made the list** - It won our search for "oversized bath sheet", from 67 listings. - Each sheet is extra large, 35 by 70 inches. - Its listing describes heavy 700 GSM, 100% Turkish cotton, at the top of Peacock Alley's heavy band. **Drawbacks** - Heavy cotton holds more water and takes longer to dry than microfiber (our inference from its weight). - The pack is two sheets only, with no hand towels or washcloths. **Skip it if** your bathroom is damp and has little room to hang a big towel flat. ### 3. JML Microfiber Bath Towels, 2 Pack: best for drying fast **Why it made the list** - It was a runner-up in our "quick dry bath towel" search, from 62 listings. - Its listing describes two microfiber bath towels made with fast-drying fabric. - Each one is 30 by 60 inches, with a hanging loop, so it covers more of you than a compact travel towel. **Drawbacks** - Microfiber feels smooth rather than fluffy. If you love thick cotton, it may disappoint. - Our quick dry search ranked a compact travel towel above it. We left that one out because it is not bath size. **Skip it if** a plush cotton feel matters more to you than drying time. ### 4. American Soft Linen Turkish Cotton Towels, 4 Pack: best Turkish cotton **Why it made the list** - It was a runner-up in our main search. - Its listing describes four full-size bath towels in 100% Turkish cotton, made for everyday use. - Four matching bath towels suit a couple or a family that needs more big towels than small ones. **Drawbacks** - There are no hand towels or washcloths in the set. - The title gives no GSM weight. **Skip it if** you want a matching set with hand towels and washcloths. ### 5. Utopia Towels 8-Piece Towel Set: best for stocking a whole bathroom **Why it made the list** - Its listing describes eight ring-spun cotton towels in bath, hand and washcloth sizes. - It has the most pieces of any of our picks. **Drawbacks** - Our main search still ranked the [Amazon Basics set](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-bath-towels/#pick-1) first. - More pieces does not mean more big towels: much of the set is hand towels and washcloths. **Watch for this:** Utopia also sells a jumbo bath sheet under several listings with near-identical titles. Our searches found three of them. They are a different product from this set. **Skip it if** you only need bath towels. ## What we left out, and why Our three searches returned 185 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 30 of them, read the listing pages of 9 finalists, and named a winner and runners-up in each search. We kept five and left out: - **Rainleaf Microfiber Towel**, the winner of our quick dry search. Its listing sells it as a compact camping, travel and gym towel. Our pick 3 covers quick drying at bath size. - **Utopia Towels Jumbo Bath Sheets**, runners-up in our quick dry and bath sheet searches. It is the same bath sheet under three listings, lighter than our pick 2, and a second Utopia product next to our pick 5. Wirecutter's top pick for a thick terry towel is the Frontgate Resort Collection Bath Towel. Frontgate sells it on its own site, and it did not come up in any of our three Amazon searches, so it is not in the comparison table. The [Amazon Basics 6-Piece Cotton Towel Set](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-bath-towels/#pick-1) won our main search: 100% cotton, with two bath towels, two hand towels and two washcloths. For a bigger towel, the [White Classic bath sheets](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-bath-towels/#pick-2) won our bath sheet search, and for fast drying the [JML microfiber towels](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-bath-towels/#pick-3) were a runner-up in our quick dry search. ### What does GSM mean on a bath towel? Grams per square meter, a measure of how heavy the fabric is. Peacock Alley puts 300 to 400 GSM at light, 400 to 600 at medium and 600 to 900 at heavy, and says heavier towels are usually denser and more absorbent. They also dry more slowly, which is our inference: there is more cotton to hold water. ### Is a bath sheet better than a bath towel for a small bathroom? Only if you want to wrap up fully. Peacock Alley puts a bath sheet at around 35 by 60 inches against about 27 by 52 for a standard towel. The trade-off is space: if your towel bar is short, a sheet may hang folded and dry more slowly. For wrapping up after a bath or shower, our [women's robes guide](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-robes-for-women/) covers terry, waffle and fleece robes. ### Are Turkish cotton towels worth it? If you want a plush feel and extra durability, yes. Peacock Alley credits Turkish cotton's extra-long fibers for both. Our [White Classic bath sheets](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-bath-towels/#pick-2) and [American Soft Linen Turkish Cotton Towels, 4 Pack](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-bath-towels/#pick-4) use it; plain cotton works well too. ### How did TwelveTabs choose these bath towels?
