It won our main search: a water-resistant backpack with a 15.6 inch laptop compartment, organized sections, a hidden anti-theft pocket and an outside USB port. - **A women's work bag:** LOVEVOOK Laptop Backpack for Women with Tumbler Pocket. It won our women's work backpack search: a water-resistant 15.6 inch laptop bag with nineteen pockets and a large pocket for a tumbler. - **A 17 inch laptop:** SHRRADOO Extra Large Travel Laptop Backpack. A runner-up in our main and work and travel searches: a 52 liter heavy-duty backpack that holds laptops up to 17 inches. - **Work trips by plane:** Taygeer Travel Laptop Backpack. A runner-up in our work and travel search: a carry-on laptop backpack sold as airplane approved, lighter than the winner, with room for a trip. Our top pick for most commutes is the **[MATEIN Travel Laptop Backpack](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-backpacks-for-work/#pick-1)**. It won the main TwelveTabs search we ran for this guide, "best backpack for work", out of 29 Amazon listings. It has a 15.6 inch laptop compartment, organized pockets, water-resistant fabric, a hidden anti-theft pocket and a USB port on the outside, so it suits anyone who carries a laptop to the office every day. Prefer a tote, briefcase or shoulder bag to a backpack? See our [laptop bags for women guide](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-laptop-bags-for-women/). For a women's work bag, the **[LOVEVOOK Laptop Backpack with a tumbler pocket](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-backpacks-for-work/#pick-2)** won our women's search. If you carry a 17 inch laptop, the **[SHRRADOO Extra Large](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-backpacks-for-work/#pick-3)** backpack fits one. And for work trips by plane, the **[Taygeer Travel Laptop Backpack](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-backpacks-for-work/#pick-4)** is sold as airplane approved. Still choosing the laptop to carry? See our [laptops for work guide](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-laptops-for-work/). ## How to choose a backpack for work A work backpack carries the same things every day: a laptop, a charger, a water bottle and a few small things you need to find fast. For the bottle, see our [Hydro Flask guide](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-hydro-flask-bottles/); for a battery pack, our [Anker power bank guide](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-anker-power-banks/). Carrying gym gear to the office too? See our [gym bag guide](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-gym-bags/). - **Laptop size.** Check the size your laptop compartment fits, in inches. Three of our picks fit 15.6 inch laptops; the SHRRADOO fits up to 17 inches. - **Organization.** Carryology, a site about bags, calls good organization and easy access crucial in a work bag, because they affect how well you work through the day. Count the pockets you will really use. - **Size, in liters.** Nomads Nation, a travel site, lists work bags by liters, down to a compact 14 liter bag for a 13 inch laptop. A bag for a trip runs much bigger; our SHRRADOO pick is 52 liters. Bigger is heavier to carry. - **Comfort and weather.** Carryology also names durability, comfort and weather resistance. Look for padded straps and water-resistant fabric, which our top two picks name in their listings. - **Security and charging.** Some bags add a hidden pocket for a wallet or passport, and a USB port on the outside. The port passes power through from a battery pack you put inside (our inference: none of these listings names a battery). ## Our picks in detail ### 1. MATEIN Travel Laptop Backpack, 15.6 Inch: best overall **Why it made the list** - It won our main search, "best backpack for work", from 29 listings, and was a runner-up in our women's search. - Its listing describes a dedicated 15.6 inch laptop compartment and several organized storage sections. - It is made of water-resistant polyester, with padded shoulder straps. - It has a hidden anti-theft pocket and an outside USB charging port. **Drawbacks** - It is styled as a travel and college bag, and our women's search noted it lacks work styling. - The USB port needs your own power bank inside the bag (our inference). **Watch for this:** MATEIN also sells a Business Laptop Backpack under a near-identical title. It won our work and travel search. We kept this one because it won our main search. **Skip it if** you want a bag that looks like a briefcase. ### 2. LOVEVOOK Laptop Backpack for Women with Tumbler Pocket: best women's work bag **Why it made the list** - It won our search for "women's backpack for work", from 27 listings. - Its listing describes a professional work and laptop bag that fits a 15.6 inch laptop. - It has nineteen pockets, water-resistant fabric and a large pocket for a tumbler. **Drawbacks** - It is styled like a purse, which will not suit every office or every person. - LOVEVOOK sells a second women's work backpack with a similar title and the same nineteen pockets. Check which one you are buying. **Skip it if** you carry a laptop bigger than 15.6 inches. ### 3. SHRRADOO Extra Large Travel Laptop Backpack: best for a 17 inch laptop **Why it made the list** - It was a runner-up in our main search and our work and travel search. - Its listing describes a heavy-duty backpack with 52 liters of space. - It holds laptops up to 17 inches, the biggest of our picks. **Drawbacks** - Our work and travel search found it noticeably heavier when empty than the winner. - 52 liters is a lot of bag for a daily commute (our inference from its size). **Skip it if** you carry a small laptop and little else. ### 4. Taygeer Travel Laptop Backpack: best for work trips by plane **Why it made the list** - It was a runner-up in our search for "backpack for work and travel", from 20 listings. - Its listing sells it as an airplane approved carry-on backpack with packing room and dedicated compartments. - It is lighter when empty than the search's winner. **Drawbacks** - Our search noted it leans toward flights more than a daily office run. - "Airplane approved" is the seller's claim. Check your airline's own size limit before you fly. **Skip it if** you only commute across town. ## What we left out, and why Our three searches returned 76 listings. TwelveTabs shortlisted 30 of them, read the listing pages of 9 finalists, and named a winner and runners-up in each search. We kept four and left out: - **MATEIN Business Laptop Backpack**, the winner of our work and travel search. It is a second MATEIN 15.6 inch laptop backpack, the same brand and type as our top pick. - **LOVEVOOK Laptop Backpack for Women**, a runner-up in our main and women's searches. It is a second LOVEVOOK women's work backpack, the same need as our pick 2. Wirecutter's laptop backpack guide names no single top pick. It lists five, led by the Troubadour Apex Backpack 4.0 as a polished bag for the office, with others from Timbuk2, July, Everlane and Aer. None came up as a finalist in our three searches, so none is in the comparison table. ## Questions people ask ### What are the best backpacks for work?
