An in-ear AirPods model whose listing names noise cancellation up to 2x stronger than AirPods Pro 2, built-in heart-rate sensing, Live Translation and up to 8 hours of listening with noise cancellation on. - **Over-ear headphones with Apple's H2 chip:** Apple AirPods Max 2 Wireless Over-Ear Headphones. Over-ear headphones powered by the H2 chip, with up to 1.5x more active noise cancellation than the previous generation, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Spatial Audio and Live Translation. - **The newest AirPods with a wireless charging case:** Apple AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. The newest AirPods in this guide, with improved noise cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Live Translation, Personalized Spatial Audio and a wireless charging case, per its listing. Our top pick is the **[Apple AirPods Pro 3](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-airpods/#pick-1)**, an in-ear model whose listing names noise cancellation up to 2x stronger than AirPods Pro 2, built-in heart-rate sensing and Live Translation. We read 32 organic Amazon listings for "airpods" and found only six genuine Apple AirPods products among renewed units, lookalikes and colour repeats. Three were new that day, so three are picks. If you want over-ear headphones, see the [AirPods Max 2](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-airpods/#pick-2). The [AirPods 5](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-airpods/#pick-3) are the newest earbuds, and come with a wireless charging case. The two AirPods 4 models that PCMag and CNET both name are not picks, because Amazon showed only used units for them when we read their pages. ## How to choose AirPods CNET and PCMag cover the AirPods range in detail. Here is what matters when you choose. - **Style.** CNET says AirPods come in three styles: open earbuds, noise-isolating earbuds with noise canceling, and over-ear headphones. Some people prefer the open design because it does not need silicone eartips in the ear. The [AirPods Pro 3](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-airpods/#pick-1) and [AirPods 5](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-airpods/#pick-3) are earbuds, and the [AirPods Max 2](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-airpods/#pick-2) are over-ear. - **Fit.** CNET says the fit should be snug but not too snug, and comfortable enough to wear all day with few breaks. Weigh in-ear against over-ear before you buy. - **Return policy.** CNET advises buying from a retailer with a good return policy, because fit matters and may not suit your ears. - **AirPods or Beats.** CNET says Apple owns Beats, so the two can share parts and features. Beats are geared to both Apple and Android users, while AirPods have more features exclusive to Apple users, though they pair with Android. - **Which model for which need.** PCMag names the [AirPods Pro 3](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-airpods/#pick-1) for noise cancellation and sound, the [AirPods Max 2](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-airpods/#pick-2) for those who prefer headphones, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation for people who do not like in-canal earphones, and AirPods 4 for iPhone users. The two AirPods 4 models were not available new on Amazon when we read them. - **Charging port.** CNET says newer models charge over USB-C, replacing the long-used Lightning port. ## Our picks in detail ### 1. Apple AirPods Pro 3: best for noise cancellation **Why it made the list** - The listing says its noise cancellation removes up to 2x more unwanted noise than AirPods Pro 2. - A new acoustic architecture is named for more bass and clearer detail. - Built-in heart-rate sensing tracks your heart rate and calories burned for up to 50 workout types. - Live Translation and up to 8 hours of listening with noise cancellation on round out the list. **Drawbacks** - CNET says that although they work with Android, many of their features are exclusive to Apple devices. - CNET also notes that heart-rate monitoring is buried in fitness apps. **Watch for this:** The same search shows Amazon Renewed AirPods Pro units beside this new listing. This pick is the new one. **Skip it if** you dislike in-canal earphones. PCMag points those shoppers to the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, which had no new offer on Amazon when we read it. ### 2. Apple AirPods Max 2 Wireless Over-Ear Headphones: best over-ear headphones **Why it made the list** - The listing names the H2 chip for high-fidelity audio with deep bass and crisp highs. - It lists up to 1.5x more active noise cancellation than the previous generation. - Adaptive Audio adjusts noise cancellation to your surroundings, and Conversation Awareness lowers the volume so you can talk. - Personalized Spatial Audio uses head tracking, and Live Translation is listed too. **Drawbacks** - CNET calls them surprisingly comfortable but on the heavier side for over-ear headphones. - CNET notes that no USB-C to 3.5mm cable is included for wired use on planes. **Watch for this:** Apple sells this model in several colours, each as its own listing, and the listings show one set of review figures. We kept the Midnight listing, and the table's figures belong to it. **Skip it if** you want earbuds, not headphones. ### 3. Apple AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case: best for the newest AirPods **Why it made the list** - The title names a wireless charging case with the earbuds. - The listing names improved active noise cancellation, and Adaptive Audio that blends it with Transparency. - Conversation Awareness lowers the volume when you speak, and Live Translation is listed. - A new Siri AI and Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking are also named. **Drawbacks** - As the newest listing, it has the shortest track record of the three picks (our inference). - The listing text we read gives no battery life figure, which matters if you travel. **Watch for this:** Amazon lists this model twice: with the wireless charging case, which is this pick, and without it as a separate listing. The page we read had the option without AppleCare+ selected. **Skip it if** you want to know the battery life before you buy. ## What we left out, and why Of the 32 organic listings we read, six were genuine Apple AirPods products and their pages were read in full. Three became picks. - **Apple AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation.** Both pages showed no new offer in the buy box when we read them, only used units. A shopper could not buy either new that day, so neither is a pick, even though PCMag and CNET both name them - **The same model without the wireless charging case.** Amazon lists the [AirPods 5](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-airpods/#pick-3) a second time without the wireless charging case. It is the same model, so we kept the version with the case - **Other colours of the Max 2.** Four more colour listings of the same headphones share one review total with the Midnight listing we kept - **Renewed units, lookalikes, Apple EarPods and Beats.** Amazon Renewed listings are not sold new, off-brand "AirPods-style" earbuds are not Apple's, and wired EarPods and Beats models are not AirPods Wirecutter was not read for this guide, so there is no Wirecutter pick in the comparison table. ## Questions people ask ### Which AirPods are the best? CNET names the [AirPods Pro 3](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-airpods/#pick-1) its best AirPods overall and PCMag names them for noise cancellation and sound. Those who prefer headphones are pointed to the [AirPods Max 2](https://twelvetabs.com/reviews/best-airpods/#pick-2). ### Why are AirPods 4 not in this guide? When we read the pages for AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, Amazon showed no new offer, only used units. We only pick products a shopper can buy new that day, so check again whether a new offer has returned. ### Do AirPods work with Android phones? CNET says AirPods pair with Android devices, but have more features exclusive to Apple users, while Beats are geared to both Apple and Android users. ### How did TwelveTabs choose these AirPods? We compared the Amazon results for one search phrase, set aside renewed units, lookalike earbuds, colour repeats and listings with no new offer, and read each genuine Apple listing's page for its features. Each pick is an AirPods model a shopper could buy new that day, matched to a different need. ## How we researched On October 1, 2026 we read 32 organic Amazon listings for "airpods" across two pages of results. Most were Amazon Renewed units, lookalike earbuds or other colours of one model. AI compared them, read the pages of the six genuine Apple AirPods listings that Amazon showed and chose the three that a shopper could buy new that day. AI wrote this guide from that research. Listings change: we read them on October 1, 2026, and a color, bundle, seller or stock may differ today. Specs are the listing text as we read it, which our reading tool cut to about 200 characters per bullet, so a feature or battery figure may exist even where that text does not name it. Apple's own store and other retailers were not read. ### Sources - [CNET: Best Apple AirPods](https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/best-apple-airpods/) - [PCMag: The Best Apple AirPods](https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-airpods)
